Jake
took out his com-device and slipped it into a slot in a mail message machine,
then pressed his thumb on the screen. A
burst message uploaded to his device. His account was debited forty-five points.
The incoming menu read, number of
messages, POI, or point of origin, time code, and sender: ONE NEW
MESSAGE...081642Z...PORTERVILLE, CA…EARTH...MRS.GLORIA LANE. Another line read: NO NEW
MESSAGES...PROMETHEI TERRA, MARS. END OF
TRANSMISSION.
He pulled the device from the
message machine and went to a booth where he sat to watch as his mother
appeared.
“Hello, son,” she said. “Your
father and I hope that you are doing well.
It’s been so long since we’ve heard word from you. We just want to be sure that...”
